We Are Tired of People Telling Us What to Do

My friend wants to be a TikTok star. He tried and failed at it during the pandemic but he still holds on to the belief that if he just does stupid dances in front of the camera with a bit of financial advice he can make it.

I also have a neighbor who is the same way. She graduated from college with a major in Human Resources but can’t find a job because companies have outsourced them overseas and use AI, like Applicant Tracking Systems to hire employees. She wants to start a YouTube channel for creating content around productivity and time management.

I could name a few other people in the same boat, but I won’t because it gets repetitive. Besides, it doesn’t take much to see by the way of social media that there are numerous people refusing to work or can’t find work due to changes in the economy and how it too has changed everything else — including how we make money.

There are a lot of absurd “content creators” out there on social media creating and filling our heads with useless knowledge that we already know.

Most of them aren’t even experienced.

A lot of them live with their parents and drive around in Teslas touting their advice on how to get rich quick, or follow a certain number of steps and “you too could be living your dreams” just like them.

Most people hide the bad stuff

It won’t take long for one to figure out that a lot of the content out there is garbage. Everything from conspiracy theories to how-to videos, and a “day in the life” videos get old and boring.

We are tired of people telling us what to do. And worse of all — how to live.

It’s getting nauseating.

It’s hard for me to go on social media now and digest anything. Everything is in 10–30 second clips with little bite-sized doses of never-ending algorithmic hell.

I’d rather take a dirt nap.

It’s annoying after a while to see the same endless amounts of content. All this bullshit pumped out to us daily by the minute makes me want to scream.

It really sucks.

I won’t name names or point my finger. Besides, I’m doing my best to live my best life and get by with what I have.

It’s getting harder to live

Here’s the thing though: most influencers know that we don’t need the advice. It’s them that need it the most.

They do it for the money.

We don’t need another TikTok video or Insta story on our feed. We’re tired of it.

It is hard enough to live today. Every media outlet churns content that gets digested and mostly forgotten.

10 years from now you probably won’t remember that song that inspired you or that productivity routine that stole your time away.

I know. I get it. I was once there too.

I tried to do what they wanted me to do but I got tired of it. Now I wish I never knew. But that’s hindsight.

I could give a dollar for every useless skill or mindset hack that ultimately proved worthless.

Actually, do you know what the best advice I’ve received so far is?

Do nothing.

There you have it. This New Year, do nothing. Let the universe, the higher power, or whatever do what it wants to you.

Let it have its way.

Because at the end of the day, everything is an experience and a lesson. Whatever it may be is for you to find out.
